About Us

The Association of Designers of Kenya is a duly registered professional body under provisions of Chapter 108 of the Laws of Kenya to advance professional practices and promote standards of various Design disciplines  in Kenya.

The Association has Four Main Chapters namely;

  • Interior Design Chapter.
  • Graphic Design Chapter
  • Product Design Chapter
  • Fashion Design Chapter

The Association has registered graduate, professional and corporate memberships and operates Academic & Mentorship Programme where college and university students are enrolled.

The association brings together professionals from the Public Sector, Private Sector, the  Academia among other sectors with the aim of promoting and protecting the interests of its members, as well as to enhance the standards of design practice in Kenya. The association has been creating platforms for networking, collaboration and Continuous Professional Development among its members.

Broadly, the Association operates two programmes namely;

Academic and Mentorship Programme

This is a subsidiary forum for recent design graduates or those already enrolled in design colleges and universities in Kenya. It seeks to establish professionalism to the upcoming designers as well as provide early opportunities; including  paid Internships, Industrial attachments, Mentorships  and at a long term promote other professional undertakings especially   on areas of Leadership & Business Development, Entrepreneurship and Social Economic  Empowerment.

Green Interiors Programme

The program is an initiative aimed at complementing Kenya’s construction industry efforts towards developing more environment-friendly buildings and establishing interior designers’ power in the realization of low-carbon, sustainable development in Kenya.

Specifically, the purpose of this programme is to:

  1. Develop strategies of mainstreaming the green building agenda into the practice of registered members of this association.
  2. Establish available green interior design building products available in the Kenyan market and their contribution to achieving credits in major green building standards.
  3. Advice the association on green rating for integrated habitat assessment.
  4. Advice on how institutions of higher education in Kenya can incorporate sustainable design into their curriculum to prepare tomorrow’s professionals.
  5. Mainstream climate change responses into development planning, decision-making, and implementation within the association.
  6. Establish and operate the Green Label Project to be used on products that meet the eco-standards specified by the Programme.
  7. Undertake capacity building & development, be involved in policy reviews, analysis and development, and establish stakeholder mapping, consultation, and engagement framework for the benefit of the association members.

Association Objectives

The association has several professional objectives aimed at fostering the growth and development of the design industry in Kenya.

Specifically, the association

  1. Works to represent the interests of its members and the design industry as a whole. This includes engaging with policymakers, businesses and the public to advocate for policies and practices that support the growth and development of the design sector.
  2. Is committed to providing opportunities for professional development and capacity building for its members. This involves organizing workshops, seminars and training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of designers in various fields.
  3. Fosters a sense of community among designers by organizing networking events, exhibitions, and other collaborative projects. This enables members to connect with other professionals, share ideas, and form partnerships that can lead to new business opportunities and innovative designs.
  4. Sets quality standards for design services and products to ensure that members adhere to best practices and maintain high professional standards. This helps to build trust and credibility within the industry and ensures that clients receive the best possible service.
  5. Encourages its members to engage in research and development activities that contribute to the growth of the design industry. This includes exploring new technologies, materials and methodologies that can be applied to various design disciplines.
  6. Promotes the work of its members and the design industry as a whole through various marketing and promotional initiatives. This includes showcasing members’ work at exhibitions, online platforms and other public events, as well as collaborating with media partners to raise awareness of the importance of design in Kenya.
